Reminiscing: Our European Travels
It is hard to believe that a year has passed since I updated this blog. Not being able to go anywhere now, Google photos keeps reminding me of all our family travels that we were doing this time last year. I thought I should post an update so I can travel virtually while staying at home.
I always knew when we lived in the Netherlands we wanted to take advantage of being so close to everything in Europe. I asked each child to pick a place to visit in Europe and we would try to make it happen. Our oldest daughter chose Warsaw, Poland. Our middle daughter chose Paris, France and our youngest son chose Pompeii, Italy. We knew we had an almost 3 week break in the spring, so we spent some time planning and headed off. We rented a car as a family of 5, it is more economical to travel this way and adds a certain amount of freedom (and stress!) to the travel.
Paris was out first stop. We arrived the Saturday after Notre Dame had burned that previous Tuesday. We had planned on going to Easter services at Notre Dame, but it didn’t happen. The city was bustling with activity, it was packed!!! We hit all the tourist spots, but because of our time frame couldn’t do a deep dive in any one place.
While we enjoyed Paris, it was packed with people and not all that the kids thought it would be. We were able to eat some great pastries, but we were excited to get going to the next spot.
We left Paris and headed towards Dijon, France. Of course Dijon is known for its famous scientist, Henry Darcy. Did you think I was going to say mustard?? Dijon had the appeal of the mustard but also Henry Darcy. Dijon is a very beautiful town and has several famous landmarks. We did have to visit Henry Darcy’s home and visit a park in his honor. He was an engineer in the 1800’s who made several important contributions to hydraulics, including Darcy’s Law, which measures flow through porous media. He had a beautiful garden named after him in Dijon. He accomplished amazing feats of engineering and brought the city of Dijon to rank #2 in Europe for clean water in the 1800’s. Dijon has a robust history and we were thankful to take a little side tour to this town.
After France we made our way down to Italy, but I’ll leave that for another day. I’ll continue my virtual travels here soon!
